Kadalundi River



Kadalundipuzha Among the four important rivers flowing through Malappuram district, the Kadalundi River (Kadalundippuzha) is 110 km long and it originates from the Western Ghats at the western border of the Silent Valley. A rain-fed river, Kadalundipuzha has been formed by two main tributaries - Olipuzha and Veliyar.

Biyam Backwater

Biyam Kayal (Biyyam Lake) is a vast stretch of waterway situated near Ponnani in Malappuram district. A green fringed watercourse, Biyam Kayal is known for its annual boat race during the Onam season. People in and around Malappuram throng the shore to witness this huge water fiesta and you can find women rowers also in action.The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has now developed this lake as a popular tourist destination and water sports facility center. Travellers can opt for the lake shore rest house with all facilities for a comfortable stay.

Chaliyar

Chaliyar Considered to be the fourth longest river in Kerala, the Chaliyar River with more than 150 km length, makes its way through Malappuram district. It is also known by the name Beypore River. Some of the famous towns and villages located on the banks of the Chaliyar River include Nilambur, Edavanna, Areekode, Kizhuparamba, Cheruvadi, Mavoor, Peruvayal and Feroke. The Chaliyar River is unique as it will not go dry even in heavy drought season.

Bharathapuzha

Bharathapuzha The freely flowing waves of the river Bharathapuzha, popularly known as Nila, has much to do with the history and cultural traditions of Kerala. The river flows down from the Anamalai hills in the Western Ghats and meanders through three districts, namely, Malappuram, Palakkad, and Thrissur, before finally emptying itself into the Arabian Sea at the village of Ponnani.

Tirurpuzha

Tirurpuzha Originating from the Tirur taluk village of Athvanad in Malappuram district, the Tirur River makes its way through Thiruvnavaya and Elamkulam to join with Bharathapuzha River that flows into the Arabian Sea. The river course is noted for mangroves and is home to many varieties of fishes and attracts birds.Tirurpuzha has its own significance as some of the famous personalities were born and brought up on the banks of this river. Thunchaththu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan – famed as the father of Malayalam literature and Vallathol Narayana Menon, poet and the founder of Kerala Kalamandalam are some of them.

Olipuzha,

Karuvarakundu Olipuzha River is the longest of rivers in Malappuram district, which flows through a small town of Karuvarakundu.
